Having sat on Earle Street in Crewe on Thursday lunchtime, I was amazed to see Britannia go riding past me. After doing a double-take I realised it must have been on its way back to its place of rest. However, the place where people believe she should be laid to rest varies.
Of course, its local knowledge that the memorial to all the soldiers that were killed in the war, has been uprooted amongst fierce opposition, with a view to relocating it to the new, improved market square opposite the Municipal Buildings. This is a lovely place to place it. Right opposite the offices of the local council where it can be kept a watchful eye on. The new location has had a new facelift, with posh new paving and all the other mod cons you would expect being located immediately opposite the Chief Executives offices.
Naturally, lots of locals were present at the time Britannia was gradually lowered onto her base, where it was secured to ensure many more years of happiness and memories for the folk who pay their respects there each year to the men and women who lost their lives in the war. There was a feeling of happiness and excitement as she came to rest, looking glorious and new, having been refurbished and cleaned up.
So finally, its official after many months of protest and arguments. The monument is resting opposite the Municipal Buildings and Crewe Library. This will cheer up some people and upset others, yet the thing that should be considered most, is the fact that we actually have it and people will be able to pay their respects each year. If it werent for these folk, we wouldnt be here today.

As a one time Crewe resident I am happy to learn that the subject of the Town War Memorial Relocation has finally reached a positive and successful conclusion.
Whether or not one agrees with the move and new location is really a moot point. Britannia has been successfully restored to her former glory and safely relocated for the benefit of future generations.
That, I am sure we all recognise, should be the prime consideration, so that those who gave their lives in war will live for ever in the hearts of all Crewe people.
However, for those of us who live thousands of miles away, I am sure that it would be of great interest to see an actual photograph of Britannia in her new surroundings.
Would it be beyond the realms of possibility to have a picture or two posted on this website for our benefit?
