Health Warning – Doctors may be hazardous to your health!

When I was a kid, it was a standing joke that old folk never wanted to go into hospital for anything because they thought that once there, they were never going to come out alive. The truth at that time was that the NHS was at its zenith and you could probably not receive better treatment anywhere else in the world. The old timers fears were just out of date recollections of life in the 1920’s and 30’s when this was probably true.
                                                
What a strange world we live in…fast forward to the 21^st century and the converse is true; the NHS is at its nadir and if, in some misguided recollection of times past, you imagine that you will be treated successfully, you will probably end up discharged… in a hearse!
 

What is even stranger is a true story about the health hazards of Doctors. It certainly makes you stop and think. The story is set in Israel a few years ago when Doctors were in dispute with the Treasury over a proposed four year wage contract. Things had come to a head over the deadlock in negotiations, when finally; the Doctors ran out of patience and walked out on strike.
 

Severely concerned at the effect that this action would have upon mortality rates, the Jerusalem Post commissioned a survey of such, with leading funeral parlours. The shocking revelation was that deaths DECREASED by some 25% during this period! Fortunately this data’s implication was easy to corroborate, as in other regions, not affected by strike action, the mortality rate remained unchanged.
 

Upon publication of this data, the striking Doctors, miraculously came to a compromise with the Treasury Department and swiftly returned to work. Since then no Doctors have ever gone on strike again…in Israel…or anywhere else in the world.
 

Makes you wonder, doesn’t it? Seems that these days, you’re better off with a volume of Culpepper’s Complete Herbal, some leeches, and a couple of potent spells from the old hag at the end of the village…seriously!
 

So for all manner of wounds, mix the juice of the leaves of Serpent’s Tongue with the distilled water of Horse-Tail and apply in goodly measure. Apply again before a day hath passed and if the body part be under the influence of Saturn, verily it will be cured by antipathy. Proceedeth not, though, to the realm of the hospittalers, lest ye be consumed by the plague and perish!
