I must admit to not being knowledgeable about any number of things and one of those things happens to be the Baptist Church. I know that the Church must have something to do with baptism and by extension, immersion in water; so I was interested to hear about the death of Baptist Minister David Brash, who seemingly received somewhat more water than was beneficial, when his body was found in a swamp in the Philippines. Apparently he was done away with by his young Pilipino bride, who hired two assassins to perform the task.
This unfortunate incident highlights though, a growing propensity amongst single men in their 50’s and 60’s to opt for young foreign brides; usually from such countries as Thailand, the Philippines and increasingly, Eastern Europe. This, of course, tends to beg the question; what motivates them to embark upon such a path?
Now, no doubt connoisseurs of Ben Dover’s DVD productions will have their own ideas of why older men might choose much younger partners, however, I would also suggest two further motives.
Firstly, many of these men seem to be financially well off and having spent much of their lives building businesses and securing their futures, they subsequently missed out on courtship and marriage. Finding themselves then, at a time of life where their money can attract the kind of young bride that might overlook their shortcomings for the promise of a secure future (a future unattainable in their own countries); they grab the opportunity with both hands.
Secondly, being from a completely different generation from most of us, their ideal of a wife is probably based on a conception now long gone…except in countries such as those mentioned previously. Looking at the model of wife that they aspire to have, I can certainly see its attractions…in fact, it makes me wish that I had married many generations ago! Here is a brief snapshot of behaviour that it was thought a good wife would display…circa 1950’s.
As you can see, the allure of a wife like this is unquestionable…maybe these older guys have their heads screwed on after all…maybe we’re the daft ones?
Oh, there is one more point that I would like to add to the list of advise and ideals for women. It is something that they could not have foreseen in the 1950’s. My women readers will have to forgive me but what I say is true: you’re not qualified to do it and you’re not able to do it…so women…for pity’s sake…DON’T DRIVE!
