The time draws near for Remembrance Day; commemorated on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month…the exact moment of the armistice heralding the cessation of the Great War in 1918. At this time we, of course, remember all of our fallen servicemen whose lives were tragically ended.
As an ex-serviceman myself, this day is always particularly poignant and I take pause to remember comrades now gone. I am always minded though, that we tend to forget many of the post 1945 conflicts, remembering mostly the fallen of the Two World Wars; I would therefore like to ask you all, to also spare a thought for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in these other conflicts when you pause in silence on Remembrance Sunday.
I name these theatres of war below:
If I have mistakenly omitted any, then I apologise unreservedly.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.*
