January 1st, 2008 Written by Biz
Dear friends, I hope that you all had a fabulous Christmas and even if we are now at an age where we are no longer surprised by magical gifts that were our true heart’s desire; I nonetheless sincerely hope that over the Yuletide period, you at least received those most precious gifts of happiness, peace and repose.
Now that we are at the beginning of a New Year, it is generally customary to review what has gone before and to look forward to what is to come. We all have different ways of doing this but as we stand on the threshold of 2008, I recall, as I do every year, the words of an old comrade that I served with many years ago…one that was sadly taken away in a conflict now long forgotten:
To reflect and to learn your lessons from past situations is a sign of inward maturity and a sure characteristic of people who will succeed in life; perpetually harbouring regret, however, is a sign of those who will be consigned to the second rank. Learn from your mistakes, acknowledge errors and make recompense if possible, but release your transgressions and resolve to do better.
Over the year various people may well have transgressed against us but unless you release any resentments, no matter how hard this might be, you effectively consign yourself to a sort of hell, where these transgressors are running your life for you by the proxy of your own perpetual negative feelings: hold an ice cube in your hand; let the cold be a reminder of the chill ambiance of the hell that constant resentment consigns you to and as the ice cube melts, let that remind you of the drain on your life-force of such negativity…that should be the wake up call that you need.
Looking forward, don’t make resolutions; set goals. With these goals set realistic markers along the way as stepping stones to your final destination. Last year I had occasion to dislike a certain individual who constantly quoted a certain stupid saying as a sort of put down. I have let all that go now, and as a sign to myself, I quote his words here (which suddenly seem strangely apropos) “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”.
I hope sincerely hope that all of you plan and implement a golden 2008 for yourselves and that the year brings you all the very best that life can offer.
